A research team in Oxford, England, calculated travel times to major cities around the world using data from the Google Earth Engine and OpenStreetMap. Galleries of maps for different places were published in The Guardian and Spiegel-online . Owen Boswarva notes that this dataset is released under CC-BY 4.0. Peter Vander Venet (Pieter Vander Vennet) Cartographer of the month in January 2018. He learned about OSM several years ago when one of his students introduced him to OsmAnd. His first editing was on the ski slopes in Austria, and now his attention is focused on bike lanes. It maps both on trips and at home using a combination of OsmAnd, StreetComplete, JOSM and iD. Joost Schouppe announced the creation of the OSM-Science mailing list, the purpose of which is to tell about the latest scientific research, develop an OSM research agenda and get feedback, as well as support your planned OSM research. This mailing appeared as part of the OSM project for scientists (OSM-science-communication), organized by Peter Mooney, Frank Ostermann and Just himself.

OpenStreetMap Foundation
On January 10, 2018, the Pineapple Fund (a fund of an unknown owner of bitcoins) donated 18 Btc (about € 200,000) to the OSM Foundation budget. This is about 1.5 times the entire annual budget of the OSM Foundation. Details can be found on Reddit and on the OSM blog .
The Board of the OSM Foundation plans to extend the contract of its administrative assistant Dorothea for another year.
The meeting of the OSMF Council, the first since the time of the annual meeting of the members of the OSMF, was held on Thursday, January 18th. The agenda and draft minutes from the previous November meeting are now available for review.
On January 15, the Engineering Working Group of the OSM Foundation held a meeting , the focus of which was participation in Google Summer of Code 2018.
Developments
The FOSSGIS 2018 conference will be held in Bonn, Germany (March 21-24). The annual conference in German is always organized by the local team, FOSSGIS eV and the OSM community.
Currently, proposals are being collected for various sessions - reports, lectures and master classes - for the State of the Map International Conference 2018, which will be held in Milan, Italy (July 28-30). The deadline for receiving applications is February 18.
The OpenStreetMap US community is looking for speakers for SotM-US conferences in 2018 and 2019.
Humanitarian OSM
The HOT humanitarian team supports five projects of the Turkish community using laptops and smartphones, obtained through a grant from Nethope. An example of community activity is represented by the history of mapping a locality by 17-year-old Leila, a refugee from Syria.

Budget cuts may force the USDA to charge for the use of satellite imagery from the National Agriculture Imaging Program. Mapbox in its blog explains why this is a bad idea.
