Only half of the population is “mobile” in Russia

If we forget about the counting of cellular subscribers by the number of sim cards sold and use other tools to make assessments, it becomes obvious that the indicators of “mobility” in Russia are at 50% of the population. In the country, "in touch" of this type is now no more than 70-75 million people, says Igor Berezin, the leading consultant of ROMIR Monitoring .

“When calculating according to sims, it turns out that all operators have a very low key financial indicator of ARPU (revenue per subscriber) - $ 7-9 per month,” the expert says. But in opinion polls, most people admit that they spend an average of $ 15-20 a month to pay for a “mobile phone”. In addition, these polls show only about 45-50% penetration of cellular communication in the country, while the number of sim-cards released has long exceeded the number of Russians. At the same time, sociologists explain in large cities that, of course, there are more operators' subscribers — 65-75% of the adult population (80% in Moscow).

The method of estimating the level of "mobility" by the number of sold devices also has its flaws - like a simok, there can be several pipes for a person. Nevertheless, these sellers deserve attention. According to them, in Russia in the entire history of cellular communication, no more than 140 million "white", "gray", "black" phones were imported, of which around 100-105 million are now in their hands (the rest are unusable).

Dynamics of the number of mobile communication users in 2001–2007 at the beginning of the year

According to an expert from ROMIR Monitoring, the revenue of mobile operators in Russia amounted to $ 13-14 billion in 2006. “If, according to the“ sims ”, we consider $ 8 per year for ARPU, it is about $ 100 per year, and the circle in 2006 is $ 13-14 billion, - Igor Berezin points out. “If we count on“ heads, ”it turns out about $ 15-20 per month, about $ 200 a year, and from 65 million average annual subscribers, the same $ 13-14 billion.”
