The Google Reader team has finally started publishing the number of subscribers for each RSS feed. Judging by the published figures, Google Reader aggregator is almost the most popular on the Internet, at least among geeks. True, here the Google developers are a little cunning.
Google Reader developers have
disclosed information about the number of subscribers to each RSS-feed. The numbers are not yet shown in the
Google Reader interface, but they are already in the crawler “user-agent” header.
According to the
official FAQ , the “user-agent” header now contains four parameters: the name of the crawler (“FeedFetcher-Google”), the feed URL, its unique 64-bit identifier and the number of subscribers. It looks like this.
User-Agent: Feedfetcher-Google; (+ http: //www.google.com/feedfetcher.html; 4 subscribers; feed-id = 1794595805790851116)')

If one feed is published to different URLs, the statistics take them into account individually, because different URLs will have different identifiers.
Starting from Saturday, the number of Google Reader subscribers is also
taken into account in FeedBurner statistics and other analytical systems. Accordingly, the number of subscribers to the largest Internet blogs in one day jumped by
19–58% . Here are the statistics on the largest tech logs (comparing the number of subscribers February 16 and February 17).
Problogger : an increase from
11,887 to 18,759 (58%);
Read / Write Web : an increase from 42 788 to 51 107 (19%);
Micro Persuasion : an increase from 28,775 to 35,675 (24%);
TechCrunch : an increase from 189,241 to 271,074 (43%);
GigaOm : an increase from
48,426 to 58,735 (21%).
This suggests that Google Reader after a short time after its creation (
interview with developers, video ) has already become one of the most popular RSS aggregators on the Internet.
True, there is a small trick. The fact is that the number of subscribers includes not only those who read the RSS feed through Google Reader, but also the owners of personalized pages of Google Personalized Homepage. But RSS feeds are integrated into other Google products. In the future, they will also be taken into account in the statistics.
