The Cuban authorities have decided to abandon the use of software from Microsoft in government offices, in favor of open-source programs.
“This is a problem of technological independence and ideology,” commented the decision to Héctor Rodríguez, who heads 1000 students at the Cuban University, who develop open-source programs.
The situation is similar in other countries. In China, Brazil and Norway, the Linux system is used for various reasons: high software costs, security problems, or simply to break the Microsoft monopoly.
It seems that the Cuban authorities, choosing the open-source program, follow not only their ideological principles, but also security considerations: more and more often there are reports that Microsoft is cooperating with the US Army. I wonder how, after such news, [the Cuban] officer feels himself when he sees the inscription “Windows XP” on his monitor?
Cuba is serious about modern technology - it became clear after the words spoken by Ramiro Valdés, the Cuban communications minister, at a conference on technology. Information systems he called the battlefield in which Cuba fights against world imperialism.
