Western Digital released the first 14 terabyte HDD

Western Digital has developed an Ultrastar Hs14 hard drive with a capacity of 14 TB. Prior to this, the most capacious hard drives were considered 12-terabyte Ultrastar He12 and Seagate Enterprise Capacity. What technologies used by the manufacturer, consider below.

To achieve this capacity and to maintain high performance in WD, two technologies were used: the so-called tiled magnetic recording (Shingled Magnetic Recording) and HelioSeal - filling the device with helium.

Shingled Magnetic Recording (SMR)

To write more data to disk, the number of tracks on each plate increases . To fit more tracks on the plate, they are placed one above the other - like tiles on roofs. Hence the name.

But since the tracks seem to “overlap” each other, when you make changes or rewrite the bottom track, you have to correct the information on the top one. In order not to overwrite the entire plate each time, the tracks are combined into small groups (tapes), and overwriting occurs only within them.

A side effect of this architecture is reduced performance. But Western Digital uses the second generation of technology, in which the flaws were smoothed out - the sequential write speed of the disc is two times higher than that of the predecessor disc. According to the company, Ultrastar Hs14 offers an increase in capacity by 16% while maintaining predictable, stable performance.

Helium

The hard disk is made in accordance with the technology of HelioSeal, that is, filled with helium. Compared to air, helium has less resistance, which is why such HDDs are lighter, more wear-resistant and energy efficient (energy consumption in the rest mode is 60% less than in 8-terabyte “air” models). They also heat less.

The fourth generation HelioSeal, used in the Ultrastar Hs14, allows you to more densely place the disks and create HDD, consisting of 8 "pancakes". The third generation only supported 7-disc design.

“Over 70% of the“ memory ”delivered by Western Digital to the corporate segment of the market is high-capacity helium HDD,” said Mark Grace, vice president of Western Digital.

The Ultrastar Hs14 hard drive comes in two versions: with SATA (6 Gb / s) and SAS (12 Gb / s) interfaces. Key features of the new HDD:

The hard disk is positioned as a solution for BigData-storages, clouds, social networking data centers and streaming services, as well as a storage device for backups and replications. Western Digital has already delivered Ultrastar Hs14 to some corporate clients with a 5-year warranty.
