Fly UNIGINE airplanes: a new aircraft simulator for MAKS-2017
Immediately about the main thing: this year we are going to MAKS-2017 for the first time as participants and we will show another aircraft simulator on the UNIGINE 2 Sim platform. We will be there all the days from July 18 to July 23 with the development team, some you already know from the story about the benchmark Superposition . So if you wanted to talk to these guys from UNIGINE - this is your reason. But at the same time learn to fly on the Be-200 amphibious aircraft and extinguish the burning taiga as the pilots of the Emergencies Ministry. So you have two reasons to come to our booth!
Details, highres from the new project and secret photos, as usual, under the cut.
What does it have to do with simulators, you are doing a 3D engine?
In fact, we have been engaged in 3D graphics for professional simulators for almost 10 years, for them there is even a separate version of the engine - the UNIGINE 2 Sim platform. In addition to developing a visualization platform, we do projects on it ourselves - for example, a Bell 206 helicopter simulator (transported to I / ITSEC in 2013), or a VR simulator simulator for ISS crews, which was shown at SIGGRAPH 2015. And these are only public projects , our clients on UNIGINE 2 Sim have already done several dozen professional simulators. ')

This frame is from the Portland 2014 demo. Then the terrain area was 2500 square kilometers. In the flight simulator for MAKS, the virtual space is 100 times larger, 500x500 km.
Why do simulators need realistic 3D graphics?
A new generation of pilots has grown up on modern games, they are used to seeing a realistic picture and are waiting for the same from aircraft trainers. The better the graphics, the deeper the immersion and the better the training of pilots, who sometimes have a mistake worth hundreds of human lives. Realistic visualization helps sharpen every action to reflexes and work out all options for abnormal situations when, due to the failure of avionics, the pilot has to rely only on visual guidelines.
Most of the existing professional visualization systems do not shine with high-quality 3D graphics - this is what we are trying to change.
The thesis about realism perfectly proves this video. In order to make such multi-layered 3D-clouds, before the release of UNIGINE 2.4, the programmers of the engine were “thrown” at the sky on different planes in order to better study how real clouds behave.
In order to achieve greater likelihood of atmospheric effects, we repeatedly consulted pilots and aviation experts in the process.
Where and on what will we fly?
At the concept stage, the flight simulator had different scenarios, so this post could well be about a war with Somali pirates. But in the end we chose a more peaceful option: extinguishing forest fires in the Baikal area from the Be-200 amphibious aircraft. Yet we ourselves are from Siberia, the topic is literally a close one. And topical: about the burning taiga this summer, the alarm is sounding even in NASA, calling the Siberian fires the most ambitious in 10,000 years.
Just two weeks ago, Siberia was ablaze from the Krasnoyarsk Territory to the Far East.If you now follow the link to the map fires.ru, you will see how much they have become smaller. The most sophisticated of them could be extinguished only with the help of aviation: the Be-200 aircraft and Mi-8 helicopters.
The work of Avialesookhrana is generally saturated with the harsh romance of real men - there is a great article about this in National Geographic , for example. Jumping with a parachute into a raging forest fire is definitely not for the faint of heart. Therefore, we made a simulator, which in the future will help the pilots of the Emergency Ministry to better prepare for the hard work.
The main role is the Be-200, a unique Russian amphibian. On the fly, it can take water from lakes and rivers, carry up to 12 tons of water, using a thermal imaging camera to find fires tens of kilometers away, even if the fire is hidden by a curtain of smoke.
What is the simulator made of?
The stand for MAKS-2017 turned out to be intentionally minimalist - a frame, an armchair, simmer controllers, computers, and UNIGINE 2 Sim inside. Rama made to order according to our drawings. The filling is made up of four computers: three image generators draw a view from the cockpit, one CIGI server provides aerodynamics and simulates an instrument panel with a thermal imager. Yes, the simulator does not yet have an exact replica of the Be-200 cockpit and a mobile platform, although there are already offers from partners to create hardware. But to demonstrate the capabilities of the engine and dive into the flight on UNIGINE 2 Sim this iron is enough.
Inside the system users - i5 4570/16 GB / GTX 1080 / SSD.
UNIGINE 2 Sim supports multichannel imaging with a frequency of 60 Hz. For synchronization between the host and the three IGs, we use the CIGI protocol, a standard widely used in the industry of professional simulators, one of its developers is Boeing.
The view from the cockpit is displayed on 32 "monitors with a resolution of 2560x1440. Everything is controlled using the Throtmaster Hotas Warthog RUD / RUS and pedals of the same name.
And finally, the video project at the stage of "work in progress".
The simulator will be refined, by the end of the year we plan to bring it to an even higher level. Come see and try, and at the same time talk about 3D graphics as developers with developers. MAKS this year runs from July 18 to July 23 in Zhukovsky near Moscow. Our stand is D9-7 in pavilion D9. Tickets for MAKS-2017 can be bought on the website of the air show .
