NTT Com announced the creation of the world's first fully software-defined network

The provider of communications services NTT Communications Corp announced that it is launching the world's largest software-defined network (SDN), which covers more than 190 countries. According to the company's representatives, SD-WAN Service Portfolio is “the first 100% SDN in the world”, which will provide high-performance SD-WAN services for companies of various sizes.

The essence of SD-WAN is to create a single virtual network fabric consisting of secure overlay connections over physical connections, which can be dedicated channels, low-cost Internet channels, or even LTE. Through monitoring the performance of WAN connections, the system routes traffic, thereby optimizing channel utilization. The main advantage of SD-WAN is the ability to control traffic at the application level. SD-WAN can be used to connect branches of a company (or data centers) in several countries to a central corporate network.

NTT Com states that they have built their SD-WAN platform based on a locally distributed architecture covering more than 75 cloud centers. This architecture has been optimized for networking and security services. In this case, it uses the technology that the company acquired together with SDN-startup Virtela in 2014.

“Digital transfigurations are happening in every corporation today, radically changing business models,” said Shuichi Sasakura, senior vice president of NTT Com. - The NTT SD-WAN Service Portfolio Global Service is an end-to-end solution that provides organizations with access to a flexible and scalable network that fully meets their specific requirements. This allows companies to be more competitive in the digital economy. ”

The new platform is able to transmit analytical information about the state of the network in real time. This gives management and IT operators an understanding of the state of the security mechanisms, performance, and whether it affects the user experience.

Another feature of the SD-WAN Service Portfolio is increased connectivity flexibility. The platform supports all types, including local ISP, Internet, MPLS, LTE and wireless connections. Users get the opportunity to combine them according to the requirements of the companies. Other useful benefits are secure Internet gateways, URL filtering and intrusion prevention services.

Stu Miniman, chief analyst from the Wikibon consultancy community, noted that telecommunications companies had been trying to gain a foothold in the cloud area for many years, but they were not very successful. In his opinion, the delivery of services using SD-WAN is much more suitable for them.

“The goal of all SDN solutions is to take services that have been“ pinned ”on network devices and make them accessible, flexible and scalable using software, says Stu. - The SD-WAN direction has been actively developed in recent years, and this is exactly the solution that telecommunication providers, such as NTT, can provide. This will allow them to attract new customers and improve the quality of services they already have. ”
