How to standardize data center: Open19 Foundation will do it

LinkedIn, Hewlett-Packard Enterprise and General Electric Digital and several other IT giants have announced the start of joint work on the project, the purpose of which is to simplify the process of acquiring hardware for data centers.

They organized the Open19 Foundation group and offered to standardize the approach to the creation of a data center. As a "point of support", representatives of organizations plan to use 19-inch server racks, as the most common.

“The fact that our partners have joined the project will allow us to actively develop the open platform Open19,” says Yuval Bachar, president of the Open19 Foundation and lead engineer for infrastructure architecture on LinkedIn.

Participants developed the concept of “block cage” (brick cage) - a chassis similar to the chassis for blade servers, offered in 12U or 8U form factors. The solution should provide quick and easy cabling between the units located in the rack. Blocks can be both servers and data storage systems.

The idea is that system administrators will fill each block-basket with the necessary hardware, and then connect it to the switches and power shelves.

The solution will include : a 19-inch rack, a block-basket, a power shelf, switches, an optional module with a backup battery, a network switch, power and data cables.

Open19 chassis design

Open19 will define a universal form factor for racks, baskets and set standards for network structure and power consumption. In a statement, Open19 representatives say that it will allow operators of all sizes to create flexible data centers and peripheral computing solutions.

Now Open19 continues to actively search for new team members who want to help develop the project. The participants are convinced that the development will lead to the development of a distributed infrastructure that will support the work of applications for the Internet of things and autonomous cars.
