Americans laid 19 million kilometers of fiber last year.

In 2006, as part of providing new services, American telecom operators from telephone companies laid out over 19 million kilometers of fiber optic cables across the country (this is 9.1% more than in 2005).

At the same time, 16 million kilometers were laid by telephone companies, Business Wire reports, citing TIA research.
