New version of HPE Recovery Management Central 4.0 is available for download.

The new version of HPE Recovery Management Central (RMC) 4.0 is available for download through the official website of Hewlett Packard Enterprise. Not sure what RMC is? This software combines two (and now three) HPE storage systems into a single structure that allows you not only to efficiently process transactions and store operational data (3PAR and StoreVirtual VSA), but also to provide their backup and recovery (StoreOnce). More information about the update - under the cut.

In the case of using RMC, traditional backup software with its complex infrastructure and many thousands of investments in licensing and support is not required. In the world of HPE Recovery Management Central, everything is much simpler: a snapshot is made on the storage system, which is directly transferred to the StoreOnce disk backup system, deduplicated and stored there. Some manufacturers even claim that it is enough to take a snapshot of the data, and this is the cheapest backup. Unfortunately, in case of failure of the main array, such a copy will be lost. From an economic point of view, this approach is also not optimal, since the cost of storing a gigabyte on the main storage system will always be more expensive than the backup system.

Direct backup does not deny the need for backup to tape, which can then be removed from the library and moved to a remote site for long-term secure storage. This procedure may be governed by the company's internal policies or local laws, and RMC does not attempt to do so. However, the number of flash arrays is steadily growing, and even in a crisis Russia, sales of hybrids and AFA significantly exceed the supply of traditional storage systems. Why do customers buy flash arrays? To process a large number of transactions, which means that data changes too quickly. Thus, incremental copying once a day to tape is simply inadequate from the point of view of data recovery in the event of any failure or accidental deletion.

On the contrary, the RMC allows you to run the backup procedure much more often, possibly without the participation of a system administrator, at the request of the business application itself. Snapdiff technology sends only modified 3PAR snapshot blocks to StoreOnce. This backup is much - up to 23 times - faster than tape. Recovery is slower, “only” 7 times faster, but has additional advantages. For example, you can easily get to a separate file inside a virtual machine without restoring the entire logical volume.

What's new in RMC 4.0?

1. A larger number of supported applications. It is very important that the backup is performed consistently, otherwise fast recovery becomes problematic. In this regard, the developers of Hewlett Packard Enterprise are working hard to integrate new popular applications in RMC. In addition to VMware, Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, and Windows applications using VSS, SAP HANA is now supported.

2. Support for software-defined HPE storage. HPE Peer Copy technology through RMC to organize data exchange between 3PAR and StoreVirtual VSA. Migrating volumes between disparate systems opens up more opportunities for federated data storage, for example, when running remote offices or integrating developer test environments. In addition, it is possible to organize data replication without using additional software (RMC is included in the All Inclusive licensing scheme for 3PAR and is available in the basic set of most 3PARs sold after February 13, 2017). Of course, RMC 4.0 allows you to back up data from StoreVirtual VSA, and in terms of integration, developers have made VMware support a priority.

3. Ability to deploy RMC on a Hyper-V virtual machine.

Installation and Setup

RMC is easy to deploy. The RMC installer can be downloaded from the HPE Software Depot website to any Windows server that is connected to a VMware ESXi or Hyper-V host, StoreOnce, and 3PAR / StoreVirtual VSA. The installation wizard will help the administrator to perform the necessary settings and checks, and will even offer to download the free StoreOnce VSA for test purposes, if at the moment the StoreOnce is not installed in the server room.
