Free from all shackles: Emercoin version 6.2 has become completely decentralized

In late April, we updated the Emercoin blockchain to version 6.2, in which we got rid of the latest centralization artifacts and added a built-in cryptocurrency exchanger.

The ideology of openness and decentralization from the very beginning was the basis of our project. However, by developing “Emercoin” not from scratch, but on the basis of another cryptocurrency, Peercoin , we also inherited some of its features, such as centralized alerts and mandatory dynamic checkpoints, which came into conflict with the ideology of complete decentralization.

What were the bad centralized alerts?

Centralized alerts are a tool for communicating coin developers with the community. For example, through them you can report important updates. In the case of Peercoin, developers also have the opportunity through these alerts to transfer server wallets to safe mode, in which you cannot send coins and make some other RPC calls: watch the balance, list of transactions and change the password. This applies to those wallets that work on servers: i.e., first of all, exchanges, exchangers, various services. GUI wallets do not apply safe mode. But even a temporary blocking of exchanges is a rather unpleasant opportunity, so we tried to get rid of it in our blockchain.

In the version of Emercoin 6.2, users had the opportunity to choose: leave alerts (alerts) enabled, self-register a public key of a third party that they will trust, or disable alerts in principle.

And with dynamic check-points, what's wrong?

Similarly, you can now manage the settings of dynamic checkpoints. This subsystem, designed to protect the network from some attacks that are specific to PoS, was also inherited by Emercoin from Peercoin. Now they continue to perform their function, but since the PoW complexity of the Emercoin network has reached half of the complexity of the Bitcoin network, their role has declined substantially. Therefore, users now have the opportunity to reject “non-alternative check-points from developers”, and use their source of check-points, which they trust more, or disable them altogether.

We crossed the Rubicon, throwing out the latest tools to influence the health of the Emercoin network. Whether such a step was right or wrong is only time will tell, but we are guided by the ideals and principles that Satoshi impressed us with and which we share. We are for decentralization.

And exchanger

And in Emercoin 6.2 there appeared a built-in exchanger for the main cryptocurrency currency. Now, directly from the wallet, you can make transfers to the addresses of Bitcoin, Litecoin, Ethereum, Dash, Monero, Namecoin, Peercoin, Blackcoin. The exchange is made through the online-exchanger CoinReform. If this opportunity turns out to be in demand, then the developers will expand both the number of currencies for exchange and the list of exchangers.
