International Space Apps Challenge: NASA Hackathon

We do not often talk about events here, but it was difficult to keep silent about it. If you are a fan of space and NASA, want to protect our planet and its inhabitants, like working with data and making new discoveries based on them, you will definitely want to participate in the International Space Apps Challenge. On the cut you will learn about 5 main tasks that you have to solve.

The International Space Apps Challenge is an international two-day hackathon where you get data and set tasks for you, as well as talk about tools for solving them. Tasks concern both the Earth and outer space.

In Russia this year there are 2 official centers for the Space Apps Challenge - Moscow and Ivanovo . Sign up - we will soon begin to tell more. Now we are thinking about how to do something in the style of a teleconference, where we may be joined by our friends from Minsk - in general, the preparation is going on rapidly. If you have thoughts about how to make it even more interesting - write to us in PM.

Tasks for 2017

The theme of the Space Apps Challenge in 2017 is our planet.

1. Earth and us (The Earth and Us)
For the study of the planet Earth as a system, NASA Earth Science uses space and aviation measurements. With their help, you can better understand and predict changes.

Tasks in this category will require combining NASA Earth Science scientific data with sociological and economic information.

2. Blue Planet
Constituting approximately 60% of the mass of our bodies and more than 70% of the Earth’s surface, liquid and frozen water is of interest to NASA, which is searching for water and life on other planets and is trying to meet the growing demand for fresh water on Earth.

Scientific data and NASA Earth Science products will allow us to better manage the quality and quantity of water, as well as predict the process of the global water cycle.

Tasks in this category will require you to analyze and visually present NASA Earth Science data on the hydrosphere (surface and groundwater, and so on) and the cryosphere (sea ice and ice sheets, and so on).

3. Caution! Danger!
Natural disasters, such as forest fires, earthquakes and landslides, are destroying the lives of people around the world. Many natural phenomena lead to an increased risk of mortality and morbidity due to exposure to hazardous chemicals and pollutants, as well as the spread of infectious diseases.

Tasks in this category will require you to analyze NASA Earth Science data to assist in monitoring natural disasters and health risks and assess their impact on people's lives and property.

4. Our neighbors
NASA does research to search for life not only on other planets, but it also explores life on Earth. The 18 orbital NASA Earth Science missions collect a lot of data about it.

The tasks in this category will require the use of NASA Earth Science research, study ecological systems and come up with a solution to better understand life on Earth.

5. Submit and create
Reaching the furthest expanses and plunging deep into our Universe to understand the secrets of our planet is impossible without innovation and creativity.

Tasks in this category will require a creative approach to interpreting NASA Earth Science data, developing new ways to use data and NASA Earth Science technologies.

In 2014, NASA-hakaton already took place in Russia on the basis of ISTU. It was attended by students, teachers and developers from Ivanovo and Yaroslavl. Then a key focus was placed on the development of robotic projects based on Lego and its own developments.

You can take part on April 29 and 30 in Moscow or Ivanovo . Registration is required.
