A study conducted by experts of the Journal of Political Economy showed that the level of pirated distribution of musical materials has virtually no effect on music sales, contrary to the opinion of numerous representatives of the recording industry.
Ars Technica writes that a study entitled "The Effect of File Sharing on Record Sales: An Empirical Analysis" convincingly (albeit empirically) proves the following: if the P2P networks, which are mainly used for illegal file sharing, affect on sales, then no more than 0.7%.
The most popular music, according to the authors of the study, is in demand both in pirate networks and among lovers of licensed music, and there were no causal links between the activity of pirates and the decrease in sales.
