Unique users are not truly unique users.

Good day, dear Habravchane! Do you consider the metric a unique user or visitor representative in Google Analytics or Yandex Metric? Me not. Moreover, I am convinced that the value of the number of visitors based on this data has no significance for the following reasons:

  1. Most Internet users have several devices and even more browsers. It is not always possible for analytics systems to identify a specific user.
  2. Mobile applications like Facebook, Twitter, VK, Telegram, etc. have their own webView based on the main browser in the OS. Cookies do not synchronize.
  3. The abundance of clients for traveling on the Internet has already been mentioned, but it is worth adding to them various plug-ins and utilities with VPN and ad blockers.
  4. TNS claims that there are about 12 unique users per person per month.

  5. Plus, the analysts of the company Imperva Incapsula analyzed more than 16.7 billion visits per 100 thousand randomly selected domains and concluded that bots accounted for almost 52% of Internet traffic in 2016.

I want to emphasize that I am talking about the unrepresentativeness of unique visitors before their identification after authorization and entering the conversion funnel. Obviously, User ID, IDFA and browser fingerprint technology as a whole are already involved.

The essence of the post is simple - the data in contrast to the interpretation of the data do not lie, be careful.

Thank you very much for your attention.
