The path from the programmer to entrepreneurs (and whether to go on it)
I post the video of my speech, in which I tried to give an overview of the possibilities of opening my own business from the point of view of a person from IT.
The presentation is not a motivational speech. Rather, on the contrary, he points to the difficulties that he will have to meet, and tries to focus on those basic things that are most important at the start. Despite the obviousness of some theses, I sometimes had to spend a lot of time and money to come to them. I hope that the conclusions from my experience presented in the presentation will facilitate the way for someone to build their own initiative. The presentation discusses the main business models and the risks that arise at the beginning of independent activities, as well as outlines some possibilities for reducing them. All information presented in the presentation is based on personal experience, and therefore is subjective. It is also important to note that since I live in Estonia, experience is most relevant when applied to the European Union (especially in the part where taxes are discussed).
Opinion "9 out of 10 companies die in the first years of work" in terms of statistics. Based on the graph, the opinion is true only in part. Most companies live much longer, especially trapped in leading accelerators like the Y-combinator. At the same time, in large temporary areas the opinion is getting closer to reality.
The reasons for the death of startups based on the analysis of postmortem from teams. The three most likely risks require special attention at start and are amenable to risk management. In the future, the entire course of the presentation is based on considering the possibility of reducing these risks in two main types of business models.
Analytical agency Gartner publishes a lot of research and forecasts that can help in choosing the leading promising technology or determining the development trend of a particular technological sphere for the coming years. One such analyst is Gartner Hype Cycle for Emerging Technologies. If you want to get additional attention to your startup or service delivery area - it makes sense to look at the technologies that are at the peak of the schedule on the left side - it is the attention of both the media and investors that are focused on them.
Further, the focus is on the comparison of the product-oriented business model (which is usually understood by the word “Startup”) and service-oriented (in the aspect of writing software for customers). They are also considered in terms of the three most likely risks mentioned above.
The presentation is quite long, the remaining slides require lengthy explanations. Therefore, if you are interested in the subject matter and you are ready to spend time watching, the following is a record of the entire report with questions from the audience.
