Matrix with ideas for startups

Just the other day, Eric Stromberg, a former co-owner of the Oyster book service, a little over a year ago sold by Google, spoke about a matrix that will help you find an idea for a new startup. The very idea of creating a similar matrix to many seemed extremely interesting. The post of Eric, posted on his blog on Medium , provoked an extensive discussion and aroused interest in the world media. Those who have not yet heard about this concept, we suggest to get acquainted with the translation of the resonant publication.

“I met many people interested in creating their company, but not having a brilliant idea, on which they would be ready to work for the next five to ten years.
In general, it seems to me that it is wiser to have patience and not to spare time to search for an idea that would capture you - that market or that opportunity, which is simply unthinkable to refuse. A little patience in the short term will save you a lot of time in the long term.

However, as I found out, a good way to find this idea is to get acquainted with a wide range of very different markets, until any opportunity or mission draws your attention. Of course, it is from this point that the main work begins: research of the market, study of its history, dialogue with consumers, identification of pain points of the idea, to make sure that it is really worthwhile.
')
To help you brainstorm, I created a matrix that outlines the various consumer markets, as well as the tactics that a company can use to launch a unique product to a particular market. Thanks to Chris Dixon , who taught me how to work with this format several years ago.

This matrix covers opportunities built on interaction with customers, but if there is interest, I will make a version for B2B. This format can even be used for a separate market — for example, media — to unlock a wider range of possibilities.

In some cells, I inserted examples of startups that fit the theme. The list is, of course, incomplete (and some companies could be included in several categories) - I cited examples of existing companies only in order that the ideas did not seem abstract and it was easier to build connections.

→ The matrix can be opened via this link.

Think of it not as a map, but as a starting point for creativity. You probably won't find ideas for a million dollars here, but the matrix can put you in the chain of thought, during which such an idea will arise. ”
