Speed reading How to memorize and understand more if you learn to read eight times faster

In continuation of the article “Fast reading. How to read eight times faster if demons are chasing you .
Today I will talk a little about memorization and reading comprehension. Reading at a speed of 300 words per minute - to understand and remember the text is not difficult, but if you accelerate to 800 and problems start.

For the impatient: you can memorize more with the help of schematic notes. Details under the cut.

Understanding and memorization

Understanding and memorization are closely related. It is difficult to remember that which I did not understand; it is also impossible not to remember anything that you understand.
')
The main difference is in time. Understanding comes while reading, but memorization will come in handy later.

For example, today I began to read the book "Harry Potter and Rational Thinking Techniques," and I understand most of what was written, and what is not clear to me, Google will tell. But if after seven or eight years my children asked to tell them a “tale about clever Harry”, I would not be able to tell the story without re-reading the book.

The first step to memorizing is playing back what you just read. After reading ask yourself the question "What is it about?"

Line - the basis of the memorization scheme

A simple diagonal line, on top of which the essence of what was read is written, is the first step to visual memory patterns. This is simpler than taking notes or writing short content.

How to draw this line?

While reading, draw a diagonal line on a blank sheet of paper. After reading the paragraph write above it about what it says. Do not peek and try to be brief. To memorize just a couple of words.

Illustration from the book: an example of a diagonal record of the children's poem “Humpty Dumpty”.

Now you can slightly complicate and expand the scheme. Add tree branches to the diagonal line. Each scion carries its own piece of information, also keep it short.

Here is an example of an extended recording scheme - all about the same poem “Humpty Dumpty”.
The scheme is read from the bottom up.

When training for instant replay, do not structure the information. Just try to reproduce in memory and record the maximum of useful information, as well as details, without looking at the book.

The skill is developed quickly, and the more practice you have, the better you will be able to reproduce what you read.

This exercise also helps improve understanding. It is very important not to pry into the read text when memorizing. Otherwise, instead of memorizing, you will practice copying.

About speed and understanding

While working to improve reading comprehension and memorization, forget about speed.

Good memorization and high reading speed are two different skills.

Train each one individually and over time, when you achieve certain results, a synergy will emerge.

Until then, remember: "Flies separately, cutlets separately."

Memorization schemes are not the only way to learn how to memorize and reproduce what you read. But it is simple and affordable, and also effective. Before looking for and trying other methods, it may be worth learning this. Try and practice, over time it will become a habit. But never, remember, never eat yellow snow, do not learn something half-heartedly. Regret your time and energy, if you want to learn to memorize more - start now and practice.
