IBM and BMW are working together to create a smart car
Over the past few years, the topic of artificial intelligence in cars (even if its shape is weak) has become very popular. We are talking about autonomous cars that can drive on the road, park or perform other maneuvers without or with minimal participation of the driver. Own models of such cars are developed by Google, Mercedes, Uber, Tesla, and even individuals, ( hacker Geohot is an example of this).
Now work on the creation of its computer control system began and the company BMW. True, the management decided not to do everything from scratch, but to develop its autonomous control system based on an existing solution - namely, the IBM Watson cognitive system. The system is already working as a doctor, researcher, lawyer, cook - why not try yourself as a driver?
IBM and BMW are now working on a single project that will allow "to test the cognitive system of Watson as an assistant driver, creating an intuitive driver support system." This system can, for example, correct some errors when driving on the road.

By the way, a few months ago, BMW announced a new mission called the “Strategy Number One”. This is a new direction of the company, which includes autopilot, mobility, information sharing between individual cars. Collaboration with IBM is one of the ways to implement a new project.
“Watson is changing the way people interact with the outside world, helping at home, at work, and on the road,” IBM said in a statement. “The new partnership will help develop a system that will allow drivers to take advantage of IBM Watson in areas such as machine learning and communication.” According to partners, after 10 years driving a car will differ significantly from current practice.
Four new BMW i8 cars are already equipped with a Watson communication system. Initially, work with the service will be to communicate. The driver asks IBM Watson questions and gets answers to them. Now the help provided by the cognitive system is to help with the operation of the car - drivers get quick, comprehensive answers to questions about the principles of operation of a particular unit or control body.
In the future, the functions of IBM Watson in cars will be expanded to implement new features. For example, a cognitive assistant will diagnose problems while driving by analyzing information from sensors installed in a car. In addition, driving on cars will be more efficient in terms of fuel use - the system will automatically adjust the operating modes of the machines in order to optimize consumption.
The cognitive system will analyze the behavior, preferences and habits of drivers, simplifying life for the latter, making the road more comfortable and, of course, safer. The cognitive system will also analyze weather data provided by WeatherCo., Which is part of IBM. After processing the information, the service will plan the best way and warn about possible problems on the road.
By the way, the participants of the new project team do not even have to travel far away on business. The BMW headquarters in Munich is located next to the IBM Watson IoT office. Now a piece of the future is being developed in this place.
