Microsoft encourages linux developers to try out Windows 10

Microsoft, after the failure of the mobile segment and the difficult transition to Windows 10, nevertheless continues to expand the geography of its own expansion. Being the developer of the dominant OS on the desktop PC market, the technology giant is also striving to enter the development environment not only as a software provider, but also as a platform manufacturer.

So, Microsoft is actively developing its own Linux environment bash WSL emulation in order to attract traditional users of Unix systems to their ecosystem, who prefer the latter in connection with their professional activities. The company recently became a platinum member of the Linux Foundation initiative and expressed its commitment to developing open source software and supporting the Linux and Open Source communities.

Even despite the obvious problems with emulating the Linux environment in Windows , associated with editing, creating and deleting files, followed by correct processing of metadata, Microsoft directly invites Linux developers to try Windows 10 as a working platform.

The basis of the motivation for the transition from Linux to Windows 10, Microsoft is building around two factors. The first is a full-fledged Linux emulation and, as a result, the ability to use all the tools available there. The second is the organization of work in Windows, that is, the developer will be able to enjoy the benefits of this platform without any problems.

Now more than ever, Microsoft needs community feedback on their new WSL product and, unlike other situations, they are ready to listen to these reviews in order to bring their development to the proper form.

“Regardless of what you usually use in Linux to create applications, be it Go, Erlang or C, give a chance to our Bash WSL and work in it, and most importantly - share the error logs. This will really make our lives easier and help us create a product that we can all use to increase our productivity, ”says Rich Turner in his video message to the developers presented above.

The ultimate goal of development Turner calls the full compatibility of all Linux tools with WSL in Windows 10.
