IE6 independence?

Translation of IE6 Independence? with interesting statistics.

After yesterday’s news that 37signals are stopping IE6 support in their products , I thought it would be interesting to look at WordPress.com statistics and compare with the data I published almost a year ago . Should I refuse to support IE6 mainstream applications?

The statistics cover the period from January 1 to June 30 of this year: 787 million "absolutely unique" visitors, 1.6 billion visits and 3.3 billion page views. In my opinion, the order of these numbers and the thematic diversity of blogs hosted on WordPress.com, make it possible to consider this data quite representative. Statistics collected using Google Analytics. The difference in parentheses is compared to the last time when I published the statistics.

Browsers

  1. 59.49 % - Internet Explorer ( -3.05 %)
    • 53.42 % - Version 7.0 ( +18.25 %)
    • 46.28 % - Version 6.0 ( -17.82 %)
    • 0.14 % - Version 5.5 ( -0.14 %)
  2. 32.82 % - Firefox ( + 2.08 %)
  3. 4.81 % - Safari ( +0.98 %)
  4. 2.04 % - Opera ( +0,26 %)
  5. 0.41 % - Mozilla ( -0.11 %)

Operating Systems

  1. 89.41 % - Windows ( -0.95 %)
  2. 7.86 % - Macintosh ( +1.13 %)
  3. 1.82 % - Linux ( -0.37 %)
  4. 0.17 % - iPhone ( first appearance in the top five! )
  5. 0.10 % - PlayStation Portable ( +0.07 %)

As you can see, approximately 27% of the visits we observed were made by IE6 users. If I were creating something for “the whole Internet” now, I would not neglect compatibility with IE6. It is clear that each has its users and customers, and their preferences may differ. If I saw that the share of IE6 fell below 10% on one of my sites, then perhaps I would seriously consider the need to follow the example of 37signals.

The good news is that most of the trends are moving in the right direction: a noticeable increase in Firefox, IE7 and Macintosh, as well as an iPhone that has steadily crept in, responsible for 2.6 million visits (and another 1.1 million from iTouch users).

Happy Independence Day!

PS Matt published his article yesterday, July 4, on US Independence Day. Hence the corresponding title. ;-)
