We test seamless WiFi using voice traffic



We continue the experiment started a month earlier, when we built a Wi-Fi network with seamless roaming and walked around the office with a tablet, observing whether fading and crashes will occur when downloading streaming video to it? The experiment was successful, there were no problems with the flow and the report was posted here on Habrahabr. But!

But in the comments to the article, doubts were expressed, since the video stream could be buffered and the seamless Wi-Fi was emulated by swapping the video before moving from one access point to another, and this video was played from the buffer after a break and the session was restored. Answering these questions, we again loaded absolutely the same network, with the same Edimax points, without changing anything in their settings (raised the same parameters for another SSID so as not to interfere with the office with my tests on the RADIUS server, which I also run in in this network). Almost voice traffic was used that could not be suspected in buffering. We are pleased to share the results of the second part of the experiment.

Comment. So far, I cannot manage tests with Tecom tubes, because I personally do not use them in the office, and all the existing ones are occupied by managers. I have my own phone. A little later Iโ€™ll take a tube for tests and look like it for several days. All tests were conducted on a typical working day at noon.

Sequencing:

A) On the server, launch the server version of iPerf3 on port 9090.
B) On the iPad, connected via Wi-Fi, launch the client. The packet size is taken as 200 bytes in three streams, that is, 200x3 bytes over TCP. (As you know, TCP is more sensitive to packet loss).

The tablet sends traffic to the server, while measuring the speed and time of packet transmission. The load is comparable to the peak formed by simultaneous conversations from 7-10 people , that is, we emulate decent SIP traffic.

Local testing was chosen specifically not to depend on the Internet channel - it would bring chaos and interference.

How iPerf3 works can be found in numerous sources or on the pages of documentation and Wikipedia, here we note an important point - iPerf3 does not buffer traffic . Thus, we remove objections concerning the purity of the past and the current experiment - in other words, nothing is taken from the cache and goes exclusively live.

In addition to the first video, we immediately give the second , where a similar test is given, but the usual ping is already in it. It shows how long it took to get a response from the server and how many packets were lost at the time of switching from point to point of response from the server in normal communication mode and at the time of switching from point to point.



Data analysis


According to the connection logs, we see statistics - the transmission rate and the number of lost packets. At first, the tablet lay on the table and was accordingly in session with one access point. Noticeable packet loss even at this time. This can be explained by the overall load on the network and on the iPad, which also sent the image to a third machine.

Then we walked along the corridor, then up the stairs, and saw a certain speed drawdown, but the route remained intact and the connection was not interrupted. It was on the stairs that the switch to another access point occurred. At the moment of switching, a drawdown of speed up to 6.82 Mbit / s is noticeable, and we immediately go to the peak. Waiting time for the reader was also a bit jumped. But in the framework of the experiment and it is permissible. Packet losses increased to 4 out of 108, that is, to 3.7%.

You can also notice that the picture on the iPad is frozen. This is not a blemish screen repeater program. This is exactly the iperf3 application on iPad. The log on the server shows that it does its work. When I tried to wake her up at the end of the video, she flew out. I probably loaded the tablet too much. The test was more severe than expected. IPad does not cope with such a load. On the way back, the delay time is even less. The network slipped only to 24 Mbit / s.

The ping test only shows the server response time. In the first switch, the response time sagged up to 81 ms. On the way back it's already 15 ms, which is absolutely transparent for VoIP, and indeed any traffic.



Eventually.The route was not interrupted. If there were no roaming WiFi network with traditional reconnection from one point to another - the testing would immediately stop and I would wait for the full switch with route recovery. Our connection did not stop and immediately after switching from point to point it reached the peak speed.

Not a zoo of course, since this is one product line, but nevertheless it is important to note that each manufacturer, be it Edimaks or any other, can take any products that support the specified 802.11r / k protocols and not use only one model, building on it has a mono network. Note also that the same protocols should support client devices, otherwise nothing will work with seamless roaming.

In any case, we are not resting on our laurels. Colleagues promised to bring a WiFi-phone, which I do not use, due to the presence of a personal phone with a SIP client. According to reviews, problems were not noticed. As it will be - just record the test with the tubes. If features and differences are noticed, we will write about them.
