The end of the assumptions and guesses: the number of Twitter users became known.

The hype around the new Twitter funding has led to the fact that almost everyone has become interested in the question of the number of users of the service :: someone exaggerates the contribution of Twitter, someone, on the contrary, downplays.

Hitwise counted that the number of visitors over the last year increased by 8 times, despite the very small base. Compete shows about 900,000 visitors from the United States per month. According to Comscore in March, the number of Twitter users in the world was 1.3 million.
In practice, this data is completely useless, since Twitter is also used from mobile phones, and with the help of applications like Alert Thingy, MySocial24 × 7 and Twhirl. Most of the active Twitter users rarely visit the site itself.
Important indicators in this kind of research are: the total number of users, the number of active users and the total number of messages sent. According to the company, which tend to believe in Twitter, the indicators are as follows:

Number of active users: 200,000 people per week
Total number of sent messages: 3 million per day.

Important: it is not clear what the number of 1 million users is made of, because much more are registered (see comments below): there may be users who sent at least one message or the number of active users in a period longer than one week (for example, month). Compared to January (100,000 people per week), the number of users has doubled. Previously, in order to double the figures, it took 9 months. So, in April 2007, 50,000 people a week actively used the service. The most interesting thing is that active users are practically obsessed with Twitter and leave an average of 15 messages per day.

Today we can talk about 4 million contacts between Twitter users (that is, some users are following the mini-blogs of other users), the research was conducted on the basis of data received 3 weeks ago. Then the number of active users was 1.3 million. I do not think that these figures have changed much in the last 3 weeks.
