9 million domain names are just numbers without letters

Who may need domains that consist only of numbers? In general, some companies instigate such domains for themselves, specifying a phone number as a name. Taxi companies, for example, do this. Domain names consisting only of numbers in gTLDs are not uncommon. About one of the seven domains is a “digital” domain.

And how many of them can there be, given the old and new domain zones? It is possible to calculate, of course, but for this you will need to do a rather serious job. It was done by Domains index employees, and quite successfully.

The work was carried out according to the following algorithm:
')
1. Getting the current list of active domains in all possible zones, with the selection of domains whose names contain only numbers;
2. Counting the number and percentage of "digital" domains;
3. Creating a spider, which passes through a given range of addresses, figuring out some details about sites that are located on digital domains. Details - information about the language of the site, its name, owner, etc .;
4. Analysis of the data and bringing them together.

After the first stage of work, it turned out that in the ccTLD there are 1,668,669 active digital domains. 3870873 domains are in the old gTLD zones, and 3392851 domains are in the new ones. Totally, 8932393 domain names out of 271 million domains consist entirely of numbers. This is a little over 3%.

The number of "digital" domains in different zones

As it turned out, in the new domain zones (.agency, .business, .travel) there are much more digital domains than in the old ones. About six times more.

As for the national zones, the most digital domains were in the .cn zone (China). This is explained quite simply. The fact is that the Latin domain names for the average Chinese look strange and difficult. Therefore, the Chinese, who do business online, use numbers that are well known to the Chinese.

In addition, the numbers are used by the Chinese, not only as, but with meaning. For example, the number 5 in Chinese sounds the same as the word "I" in the same language. And “six” is like a “stream.” Thus, for a Chinese, the domain name 56.cn may have a completely different meaning than for a European. It will be something like “I am a streamer” or “I am broadcasting”.

Here is the sorting by the absolute number of registrations of digital domain names in the national zones of different countries (10 most popular).

The longest domains are digital domains with 63 digits in the name (there are 50 of these in traditional gTLDs).
