Today I wondered: what if Microsoft, and not Google, invented Gmail? What differences would users see? What if to apply to it features of design of Hotmail?
First of all, here’s what we’ll see now if we log in to your Gmail account:

')
First of all, we need to change the name to something longer, such as Windows Live Gmail. And add visual elements related to Windows. Further, as well as in Hotmail, there should be less space for message headers to make room under the reading pane, on which we place the explanatory help text:

In the next iteration, we check the checkboxes next to the letters, placing a picture with an envelope above them. We divide the threads of correspondence (conversations) into separate letters. Moreover, in this version we will change the contextual text ad to a non-contextual graphic banner, in which at least one image from the photobank must be placed. Gmail has a chat window that I personally don’t use and I find annoying. Therefore, expand it to its full length, turning it into a full-featured chat widget, thereby blocking the block with labels. We will also slightly reconfigure the spam filter so that it misses several spam letters into the inbox:

There is not enough space for additional banners, so we will add it from above, sliding everything else down a bit. In order to ponostalize a bit, we will limit the mailbox to two megabytes (this is exactly what Hotmail provided when Gmail appeared with its gigabyte in April 2004). Also, in the style of Microsoft will make a separate start page for the mail. Imagine a banner blinking:

Anyway, something is missing. Perhaps the design is too light and simple, not enough glamor. Therefore, darken the colors and add shadows. It is generally accepted that Hotmail is slower than its competitor, so we’ll add “Download” messages. To increase the feeling of hopelessness among users, remove the link "Exit". Remove the focus from the search, removing the form right-down, and replacing it with a dog:

Voila, you're done! It was easy. Your abilities, their inspiration!
