For some time, I was anxiously waiting for the opportunity to see what Google would be able to extract from its online presentation service, but I have to say, I am slightly disappointed with the final result. For starters, they renamed Office Suite to google Docs, but the service still has beta status.
Before you admire everything that Google offers, keep in mind that not everything is so beautiful. Take for example the export function, which has many drawbacks. It allows you to save only a zip file containing your presentation as a web page. It can be viewed in any browser without an Internet connection, but you cannot save it as a standard PowerPoint file.
At first, this may not seem very bad to you, because you can email a link to view it online instead of sending the file itself, but there is one thing that strains me. The limit on the size of the presentation file is 10 MB and at least once faced with this, you will look for a way to get your presentation to work in the desktop application. Sorry, but now the only way out is to create a second presentation as a continuation of the first.
Here is a selection of what I consider good, bad, disgusting:
')
Good (which I liked):- Adding and placing text.
- Copy / Duplicate Slides A choice of 15 stylish themes in its own way.
- Versioning makes it easy to roll back changes.
- Easily share presentations with multiple people.
- Remote slideshow with minimal effort.
- Import PowerPoint presentations.
Bad (what I would like to have):- No animations or slide transitions.
- You can not post audio and video (for God's sake, they could at least combine the service with YouTube).
- No photo editor (Picasa integration looks brainless).
- Charts and graphs ... where are they? Google Spreadsheets already supports this feature, and in most cases it is mandatory when creating presentations.
Disgusting (which will prevent me from using this):- You cannot export presentations to PowerPoint.
- The limit on file size is 10 MB - see how many photos you add to your presentation! Also you can have no more than 5000 images in your presentations, documents and tables.
- The service is a bit slow ... the response time is incompatible with the desktop application.
- Only 5 ready-made slide layouts.
- The process of placing images and text is terrible if you try to align them normally. You need a grid function or the ability to align objects, for example, along the top edge.
- Does not work in Opera.
Note: the presentation is available for public viewing .Google Presentations will probably grow rapidly, and become a competitor to Microsoft PowerPoint or OpenOffice.org. Impress is not even foreseen. Hell, Google Presentations can hardly be put on a par with ThinkFree and Zoho, so comparing this service with desktop office applications will put Google in a very unpleasant way.
