Google presented free Noto font with support for 800 languages ​​and 110 thousand characters

On October 6, Google presented an enhanced version of its free font Noto (No more tofu). The name of the font says. Tofu is a well-known empty square instead of a character in situations where it is not supported by the font used: ⯐.

The new Google font supports the correct display of all Unicode characters, that is, more than 800 languages ​​and 110,000 characters.

According to Google itself, Noto was conceived as a font for the needs of the Android and ChromeOS platforms. “When we started the work, we did not realize the full scope of the task. The development required the design and testing of hundreds of languages, as well as expertise from specialists, ”the company’s blog says.

Separate problems arose with hieroglyphic writing and Arabic. The creators of the font were given extensive support from colleagues from Monotype and Adobe in the field of design. Also in the development of Noto actively participated open scource-community in the face of volunteers.

The developers claim that the project will continue to develop. “When adding new characters to the Unicode standard, they will be added to Noto,” says the company's official blog.
