Open XML is stuck on the way to ISO

The format of electronic documents Open XML, developed and promoted by Microsoft, met a serious obstacle to the recognition of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

ISO logo More than half of its members - 19 of the 30 member countries - participated in the preliminary review of format specifications by the IT Committee of ISO. This means that their decision will have enough weight to decide the future of Open XML.

All comments and objections raised by these countries will not be published until March, then it will be known whether the format is allowed for the final vote of all 157 ISO member states.

But now there is information that at least 7 out of 19 comments are what the formal ISO language is called “ contradiction ” ( inconsistency ) and in fact means that there is no question of standardizing the format. If this data is correct, then this will be more than enough to give Microsoft a turnaround.

It is worth noting that many of the countries that participated in the preliminary review have already adopted the ODF format, which still remains the only international standard for electronic document management. The representatives of Denmark, Norway, France and Malaysia have repeatedly pointed out that ODF seems more attractive to them, since it was originally created openly and therefore has a clear and logical structure.

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) did not share its comments, although Open XML was repeatedly discussed by its participants, many of which also refused to accept it formally.
