Peter Hinchens: For thirty-five years, as a necromancer, I breathed life into dead iron with a code

“Unfortunately, we do not choose death for ourselves, but we can meet her with dignity so that we will be remembered as men.”
- the movie "Gladiator"

Pieter Hintjens - Belgian developer, writer. He held the position of CEO and chief software designer for iMatix , a company that produces free software , such as the ZeroMQ library (the library takes care of some of the data buffering, queue maintenance, connection establishment and restoration, and other things), OpenAMQ, Libero , GSL code generator , and the Xitami web service.
')

Knowing that his days are numbered, he used them to the maximum, and also wrote the “Protocol of Departure from Life” , where he shared recommendations for incurable patients and their relatives.
So I want to write one last model, the last protocol, which is dedicated to how to die, having some knowledge and time in store. This time I will not issue an RFC.

My children are 12, 9 and 5 years old. They will grow up with my DNA, with my endless performances on Youtube and books.

Under the cut a bit of heritage, which left Peter.

Patents

Hinches is the owner and author of The Devil's Wiki , which defines the patent : "A medieval economic tool that politicians try to stimulate trade and wealth by prohibiting innovation and competition in crucial areas of technology."

In October 2007, Hinchens warned that after the mortgage crisis and the global debt crisis, a third economic bubble awaits us, waiting for its moment to destroy the global economy. “Falling real estate prices and bad debt are shaking up the financial markets of the United States and Europe. Bankers look nervously at their consumer loan and mortgage debt in their portfolios. But some analysts say that patents, not buildings or loans, will overturn the global financial market in a crisis. ”

Programming

Peter says in his speech that most of the programs we write are thrown away, and that’s because we don’t know what we are doing. The new means the unknown, therefore, by definition, we have no understanding when we begin.

Most developers have tried open source, but in essence no one considers this an easy or successful thing.

The solution may be the creation of a society in which people will be more important than the code . Programs are useful, but they are secondary to those who write them.

This is the first rule. The next step is to move forward before reaching agreement , and Peter talks about how to emotionally encourage their employees, making them feel that their input is appreciated.

He notes that the best developers are distinguished by good character and the ability to work with others. These are the people you would like to have assistants in working on a project.

Rule three: problems before decisions . As engineers, we are often interested in developing solutions. But every now and then we see in our industry that the promoted facade designs do not work. Development is an assumption. Peter says it’s like swimming without a compass: the farther you go, the more you get lost. Each change must be checked for compliance with the problem and more often ask ourselves: “what problem do we solve?”.

Rule four states: “ contracts to internal organization ”. We have contracts between people. Details of the application are less important than the quality of the software. If the end users are satisfied, they do not care about the internal organization. Peter talks about permits for eliminating barriers and equalizing all rights.

“Death is always near. She is behind the left shoulder of each of us. The day will come, and she will touch it, and this will be the last moment. Death can fill life with awareness, if you remember it.

Every day, every hour, every moment you need to live, remembering her. As if she could touch you at any moment. Fear of death, knowledge of death will give strong solutions. There can be no weak decisions in the last moment of life.

Death equalizes everyone. We are all equal before her. And a bug, and a plant, and a man. There is no one more important. Death is the best adviser. ”
