Major processing plans to withdraw from the Russian market, possibly due to hacker actions

Global Payments, an international company whose headquarters is in the United States, plans to part with its Russian asset, UCS, an independent processing company, in the near future. Among the buyers, UCS shareholders see the largest players in the processing and acquiring services market: Sberbank, VTB, Russian Standard, Gazprombank, Kartstandart processing center and Qiwi group, and Goldman Sachs investment bank was hired to find buyers.

The Russian company UCS was established in 1992. Now, according to the company's website, UCS services about 20% of the turnover of transactions of holders of international and local payment systems. About 100 banks use the services of UCS, however 80% of the turnover comes from the company's historic partner - Rosbank. Global Payments acquired 100% of UCS in 2009 for $ 75 million.

Until recently, Global Payments hoped to sell UCS for about $ 100 million, but now the company is ready to consider any offers from potential buyers. And they estimate the UCS business at $ 10–15 million. Such a low estimate is a consequence of the fact that the processing and acquiring business of UCS is associated with Rosbank. Recently, relations between UCS and Rosbank have cooled considerably, especially after Rosbank had to pay almost 500 million rubles to partner banks. for failure in UCS: in August 2015, fraudsters, using payment cards, received 470 million rubles. Here are some details of the story: usually fraudsters make 5-10 approaches to an ATM, each time removing the maximum possible amount (40 bills of 5,000 rubles each, 200,000 rubles). Here, more than 3,000 such operations were performed a day, and the total amount reached almost 470 million rubles. The fraudsters had to empty more than 200 ATMs of different banks in one day. The international company Global Payments itself has also previously been subjected to a successful attack by hackers. Thus, in 2012, 1.5 million Visa and MasterCard payment cards were compromised during hacking (according to other data, scammers obtained information on these 7 million cards), due to which Global Payments lost about $ 100 million in total.

Thus, the actions of cybercriminals inflict on financial companies not only direct, but also significant indirect losses.
