The Myth of the Immaturity of Mobile NFC Technologies

Modern NFC-technologies in their current form appeared in 2002. However, these technologies began in 1980, with the advent of RFID. Perhaps the reason why people consider this technology not mature enough is that in the years that have passed since its invention, it has not had time to get mass distribution. Indeed, users around the world have begun to actively apply NFC technology only in the last 18 months, after the launch of mobile and contactless payment systems.

Someone will argue and say that NFC technologies are already quite developed , but the ecosystem itself to work with them is still at the formative stage. GSMA noted in its 2015 Mobile Economy report that during 2014, a total of 43 commercial projects were launched using mobile NFC services. As a result of such frequent launches that occurred almost every week, the total number of commercial and pilot projects using mobile NFC services exceeded 300.

Ecosystem is developing rapidly.

According to Juniper Research, the number of NFC-enabled smartphones in the world will increase from 740 million devices by the end of 2015 to 3.9 billion by 2020. Taking into account these forecasts, it becomes obvious that this technology has a great future.

But this is not the end. Another area of growth is ticket sales via mobile phones . This technology begins to be actively used in various fields, starting with contactless fare payment and ending with the sale of air tickets and tickets for various events. Moreover, the rapid growth of this trend is due to the development of wearable devices - this is another “young” technology that can often be seen in conjunction with NFC.

There are many other examples that demonstrate the rapid development in this area. One of them can be Apple Pay, which is widely recognized and continues to conquer new countries. Another is the service Samsung Pay, which is gaining momentum in the world, and is now available in Spain.

In addition, there are mobile wallet projects (Mobile Wallet) in Korea, as well as in other Asian countries. It is worth noting that over the past 12 months, the Europeans have used this technology already three billion times.

Mobile NFC is based on tried-and-tested contactless technology that, combined with existing security infrastructure and technologies, will enable NFC to gain even greater recognition.
