On browsing websites, viruses, phishing, unsolicited downloads, pop-ups and other vermin are waiting for us. WebAdvisor, a Web security company, has published a Mapping the Mal Web report that analyzes 265 top-level domains (TLDs) in terms of the likelihood of getting to dangerous sites. The results of the study are clearly presented on an interactive map of the world . Here are some interesting facts and figures from the report:
Of the domains of large countries, the most dangerous are Romania (.ro) - 5.6 percent of dangerous sites and Russia (.ru) - 4.5 percent. Island countries offering free or anonymous domain registration occupy the top of the list of dangerous TLDs. These include Sao Tome and Principe (.st) off the coast of Africa with a monstrous 19 percent, Tokelau (.tk) in the Pacific with 10 percent, Turks and Caicos (.tc) also with 10 percent, and finally South Georgia / South Sandwich (.gs) near Antarctica with 9 percent. Of the general purpose domains, .info is recognized as the most dangerous - 8 percent of sites are considered dangerous. Behind him comes the ubiquitous .com - 6 percent. The least dangerous sites are honest Scandinavian guys. The four best performing countries are northern Finland, Norway, Sweden and Iceland. The fifth place is taken by Ireland. The safest place on the Internet: .gov. Designed for US government agencies, this is the only top-level domain in which no dangerous sites are found. The worst places to download files are Samoa (.ws), .biz and Bulgaria (.bg). Downloading files in these domain zones you in one case out of 10 will deal with a dangerous site. The worst domain in terms of spam: .info. 73.2 percent of more than 6000 sites tested in this zone are classified as dangerous. It is followed by Russia (22 percent) and South Korea (20 percent). In other words, entering your e-mail in the forms on sites in these zones, you risk getting a flurry of spam. Conclusion: think twice before downloading files from Bulgarian sites and register on sites from the .info zone. This is a real virtual jungle.
