HD Photo, image format from Microsoft + photoshop plug-in

On Wednesday, Microsoft announced a plug-in that gives Photoshop the ability to read and save images in the HD Photo format, which would be developed by Microsoft.

The beta version of the plug-in, written by Pegasus Imaging and Microsoft using Adobe, is available for free to Windows users on the Microsoft website.

A version for PowerPC and Apple computers based on Intel processors will be ready within two weeks.
At a meeting in Las Vegas during the trade show from the Photo Marketing Association, Josh Weisberg (director of digital imaging at Microsoft) said the final version should be ready in April.

Weisberg also added that several hardware companies are already embedding HD Photo into their products.
Companies include: Sunplus Technology and Novatek, Taiwanese companies that produce image processing devices, and AbilityEnterprise, a Taiwanese camera maker that patents its designs for better-known brands.

Microsoft has spent years developing HD Photo and now hopes to eventually replace the ubiquitous JPEG with it.
Weisberg believes that the first cameras supporting HD Photo will appear within 12 to 18 months.

“Modern cameras can get much more information than JPEG allows. It's already a bit old. ”, Said Weisberg.

According to Microsoft, HD Photo compresses images more compactly, supports a wider color spectrum and can store the smallest difference in colors. The company hopes to make a profit from HD Photo, enticing users to use Microsoft products that support this technology - for example, Vista and its photo gallery or Microsoft's Expression line for image editing.

HD Photo technology is built into Windows Vista, but it is called by its old name - Windows Media Photo.
In an attempt to spread the technology as widely as possible, Microsoft changed its name to a more neutral one, thereby removing some licensing restrictions and looking for a way to make this file format a production standard.

At the meeting, Weisberg said that the plug-in for Photoshop allows photographers to save images directly from the RAW format of the camera to the HD Photo format.
The plugin works with the current version of Photoshop CS2 and the upcoming CS3, which was announced on March 27 .
