A story about how you can use Yahoo! Pipes, the new rss aggregator from Yahoo!
1. Playlist in picturesWhat is it and how does it work? The user enters his username from
Last.fm , and the pipe returns the last 10 tracks he listened to and replaces them with five
Flickr images, most likely related to music from the playlist.
How useful is this? This is pretty cool. Just need, as usual, to use Last.fm, and the pipe itself will show images related to your music. It would be better if this could be done with video or album art, but I don’t think this is real at the moment (it’s not possible to analyze the content of feeds and split it into two different pipes). If anyone knows how to do this, let them let me know.
Problems? See the connection on the left side of the workspace that leads into nowhere? This is a bug, really completely harmless. I decided to use the default name of a real user Last.fm, because there are always fresh tracks in his feed. I hope he will not mind.

Technocrati search to find articles that are similar in subject to articles from his blog, and adds links to them using Ajax.
Here you can look at the blog, and
here to read about how this is done.
How useful is this? Similar functionality is in the plug-ins to Wordpress, but the ingenious in this approach is that you can easily change the source of articles: they don't have to be Technocrati, they can be anything. In other words, this is a really useful plugin for blogging.

Want to read what Europeans are interested in, but do not know the language? No problem, with the help of the pipe I took the 10 most popular records from the Spanish site
Meneame.net , and from the German and French versions of
Wikio , and created one feed with their translation into English.
How useful is this? Quite, I took a simple example, but the ability to combine feeds in different languages and turn them into one feed in a language of choice can be very useful for many.

And, perhaps, you can simply create one pipe, which in a second will bring you the answers to all your questions? Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you "Travel Lover". It may seem that this is the most difficult of all the pipes presented here, but to make it extremely simple. It combines images with Flickr, texts from
Yahoo Answers and news from
Yahoo News that refer to the place you want to go. (Of course, you can add as many sources as you like, I chose these three for the sake of simplicity). The result will be a useful feed with lots of information on the place of interest.
How useful is this? Very useful. By slightly configuring this feed, you can get a full replacement for what could be a full service.

this pipe, which allows you to read the articles of the New York Times, replacing each article with several images from Flickr. I just replaced NYT with Digg. However, I wanted to do something original, so I decided to combine the articles with pictures.
How useful is this? Not really. News from Digg is analyzed through a special module, and the result of this analysis is used to get one image from Flickr. Most often, the result has nothing to do with the article, but occasionally it works. No matter what, this is a fun way to read news from Digg.
Problems? Yes. I was unable to sort the feed so that the images follow the articles. This would be possible if in Pipes there was a counter that allowed adding to each feed a new field with a number that would be used for sorting. There is no way to add such a counter, but if anyone knows it, let me know. At the moment, this feed is not so useful, but I decided to write about it, because it shows what difficulties you may encounter when you want to do something more complicated.
