The first meeting of the Moscow IoT Community: how we found a bug in Visual Studio

Recently, the first meeting of the Moscow Internet of Things community took place, the goal of which was to go from creating a simple device on the Raspberry Pi to visualizing data received in the cloud from this device. It was interesting and fun, and we also found a bug in Visual Studio. Details under the cut (many photos).

Our community is young, but active. The first meeting turned out to be large-scale: a full-day one-day laboratory work. The meeting partner was Microsoft , providing us with a room and lunch. Well, Katalin Gheorghiu , an experienced Romanian developer who won the Microsoft MVP award 6 times in a row, was the headliner of the meeting. He organizes and conducts similar laboratory work in Eastern Europe. Well, this time he became our guest:

So, the participants had sets of Raspberry PI 2, LED button wires and many other little things.

The purpose of the work was:

For someone who is difficult to do everything independently, there are already many ready-made examples .

The work took place in a friendly and creative atmosphere:

The desire to learn new things has united completely different people.

Well, the "creative mess" added the necessary entourage to the work process :)

In addition to laboratory work, at the meeting you could listen to reports about the .Net Micro Framework and the Azure IoT Hub. And, of course, it was possible to communicate with the speakers and experts.

It is worth saying that in the process of work, many people encountered problems when connecting Visual Studio to Rasbpbery Pi2 with Windows 10 IoT Core. In the announcement of the meeting, there was a request to install in advance all the necessary programs and components , but not everything went smoothly.

As it turned out, the problem was in the Russian language Visual Studio. The Russian version looked for the components necessary for work with Windows 10 IoT Core, in a folder for the localized libraries. Whereas everything needed was only in the English-language folder. Having suffered a little, we found a solution. It was necessary to simply install the English language pack. However, the process of its installation was long and because of this, not all of those who came had time to complete the laboratory work to the end.

But on the other hand, some people even managed to over-fulfill the plan and try all the hardware included in the kit:

Well, the next meeting of the Moscow IoT Community is just around the corner. Join and wait for announcements! It will be interesting!
