Rating of programming languages in 2016

The debate about which programming language is better does not subside for many years. Many agree that, nevertheless, one cannot speak of a "better programming language." Some more common, some less. Moreover, studying one programming language, you have to learn things related to it, which often leads to the study of another programming language, then the next one, and so on ...

In order to show which programming languages are more in demand or widespread at the moment, a number of organizations maintain their own ratings. The data of these ratings are taken from a number of data sources. These are forums, job offers for programmers, mentions on social networks, polls, code repositories. These kind of ratings are useful for tracking trends. In the sequel - a few ratings that are considered the most authoritative.

RedMonk rating

This analytical company regularly publishes its own ranking of programming languages. It builds on the basis of assessing the combination of popularity on GitHub, plus the active discussions on Stack Overflow. The leaders here are JavaScript, Java, PHP and Python.

IEEE Spectrum

IEEE Spectrum is a magazine published by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers ( IEEE ). A few days ago, this magazine published its rating of the popularity of programming languages. As you can see, the leader here is C, followed by Java, Python and C ++.

In this ranking, R is the fifth most unusual. The explanation is simple - this language is in demand in large data processing systems. Accordingly, the number of requests for Stack Overflow is growing. It should be taken into account that 62,000 new repositories appeared on GitHub right away. Many new vacancies and references to the language in research publications.

IEEE experts used 12 different metrics from 10 sources to create their rankings. The main thing is the search for results for the query “name of the programming language” on a number of popular sites. Account and materials that are issued in the search results Google, Google Trends data, mentions in social networks.

Tiobe

The company TIOBE Software, publishing its rating , notes the increasing popularity of the assembler. According to this rating, the language has risen by two positions - from 12th to 10th place. This is due to the rapid development of the Internet of things. Data analysis is based on the search results of many systems, including Google, Google Blogs, Yahoo !, Wikipedia, MSN, YouTube, Bing, Amazon and Baidu.

What does all of this mean?

Only that the best programming language in the world simply does not exist. Many developers work not with one, but several programming languages, simultaneously studying new technologies. In addition, the popularity and relevance of a programming language largely depends on the demand for a technology that requires the use of a particular language. Now the trend is Big Data, and, as we see, the significance of R. begins to grow. We also see that the unambiguous leaders of all three ratings can be called C, Java and Python. Do you want to learn any of these languages? It is hardly lost.

But ratings are just food for thought. If you are going to start learning a programming language, this information can be very useful to you. But do not blindly trust the rating, better learn the features of each language. If you are already an experienced programmer, then you will still be interested to look at the statistics - maybe for sporting interest, and maybe for the sake of knowing what heights to overcome next time.
