Rating of countries in which it is more favorable to deploy a server farm

Consulting company Cushman and Wakefield conducted another case study called DATA CENTER RISK INDEX, which concerns the question of which countries are most favorable to host and operate server farms. Recall that a similar study was conducted three years ago.

A survey was conducted in which more than 4 thousand owners and users of data centers around the world took part. The issues related to such concepts as the cost of electricity, average data transfer rate, level of corporate tax, ease of doing business, availability of water, and political stability were taken into account. Attractive from the point of view of the construction and operation of data centers, as it turned out, are the countries with a cold climate, located near the North Pole. Iceland, Norway, Sweden occupy a leading position.

The leaders of the past top 10, represented by Great Britain and the United States, have sunk to the lowest part of the “fresh” top 10.

And so, according to the results of Iceland - the leader, Norway and Switzerland are second and third place, respectively, followed by Finland, Sweden, Canada, Singapore, South Korea, the United Kingdom, the United States of America.

But the worst result, compared with the other participating countries, showed Nigeria. The country ranks 37th in the ranking due to poor conditions for deploying server farms. These include high temperatures, natural disasters (such as tsunamis and earthquakes) and political problems. India, China, Turkey and Indonesia also hit the list of unfavorable countries for hosting data centers for the same reasons as Nigeria.

Many factors influence the choice of Iceland as a springboard for data warehouses. Here are some of them. The country has developed an alternative energy sector; customers, when concluding long-term contracts, have the opportunity to freeze the cost of electricity from renewable energy sources for several years. Landsvirkjun’s national energy company offers customers a 12-year contract with fixed prices.

Despite the high temperature of the environment, high humidity and natural disasters, Singapore is still in the top ten. Such a leading position and growing popularity in choosing a site for the data center can be explained by a good geographical position, stable political environment, and liberal legislation. Major highways to Europe, Asia, America, Australia pass through Singapore.

The first five are European states, and - as we see by rating - mainly the countries of the Scandinavian Peninsula. It is necessary to take into account the fact that Europe makes only 20% of the total turnover (value) of the global data center services market. The share of Scandinavian countries accounts for slightly less than 2%. Political stability, a low level of natural cataclysms, a large percentage of renewable energy sources - these are the important factors that so attract companies to build their offspring here.
