Urgently required VPS with SLA: analysis of services of 32 Russian data centers

To meet the challenges of monitoring the quality of customer sites of the SLAMON service, I needed to select a data center in different regions of Russia. For this, I used the catalog of Russian data centers and, on the basis of data from supplier sites, I compiled a comparative table of services offered (table 1).

What interested me in the first place?

1. Availability of low performance virtual servers (VPS)

Our software agent wiProbe is optimized for work on low-end devices and a small virtual machine, which means it is not very expensive, it will be enough for us. Namely: VPS 1 core 2 Hz and 1 GB RAM will be enough.

2. Guaranteed Service Level (SLA)

Since we will monitor the quality of our clients' information systems, we must inform our clients about real problems with their systems, and not with the servers of our data center service providers. Ideally, we are interested in 100% availability of services with financial responsibility for violation of SLA. The guarantee should be given not for the power supply or the availability of IP, but for the service as a whole, including the communication channels to the server from the Internet.

3. Monitoring SLA

Indicators that are specified in the SLA must be confirmed by monitoring tools. Monitoring results should be available to us 24/7. The monitoring system involves alerts about planned work and problems that arise. Ideally, the monitoring system should have an API through which we will be able to integrate our system and will not spam our clients about non-existing problems.

4. Financial liability for violation of SLA

We are interested in penalties not as an opportunity to save, but only as a tool to influence the service provider. Preferably, the penalties should be progressive. for a 5-minute service failure, a 1 ruble discount is provided, for a 50-minute failure, 1000 rubles or a month free of charge.

findings

I analyzed all the data centers listed in the catalog of Russian data centers: both regional and Moscow. Only those who at least minimally report on the provision of SLA on their website got into the comparative table. Please note that the table does not include data centers, on whose sites I could not find information on the availability of SLA.

According to the analysis of the data obtained, I can say the following:

1. It seems that I am the only buyer who is interested in SLA. Those data centers that write the words Service Level Agreement, rather do it for a tick. To ensure service availability close to 100% can only network providers. Slightly more similar proposals among metropolitan suppliers. But this is all only on the site and on paper.
2. SLA monitoring systems are offered by single suppliers. As a rule, these are self-written applications. For this reason, units can boast of monitoring statistics for other customers.
3. Discounts or penalties for violation of SLA are exotic in our market.

All of the above speaks only of the initial stage of the formation of the data center services market. If you compare with Western suppliers, you can feel a striking difference in the approaches to building relationships with customers.

As a result, for our service, I decided to purchase servers from different suppliers and analyze the quality of their services. If it is interesting, I will publish statistics.
