Recently, together with
Lingvaleo, we did a survey about how well IT professionals know English, and how well they would like to know it. Why is this Newprolab? We have a lot of tools on the
program with an English interface, articles and videos, several English-speaking speakers, so I want to understand if we will lose part of the audience if we don’t translate anything into Russian.
1340 people answered us on this
questionnaire , and if someone suddenly wants to delve into the data and look for unexpected patterns, then you can download it
here. One condition is that it is a Lingvaleo and
Newprolab questionnaire with links to sites in the first paragraph of your material.

So - we compared the three most representative groups and for the time being we left the testers aside because of their small number.

To the question “At what level do you speak English?” 4.7% of admins answered that they communicate freely, watch news and movies, and 10.3% speak fairly freely, they understand the content of most films. As for progers and products, 7.3% and 6.9%, respectively, have no problems with the language, almost everyone understands 20.4% and 22.8%.
Admins use google translate more. To the question “Do you have enough knowledge to search for solutions on the Internet?” More than 10% of admins answered that they were driving everything through an interpreter, in the other two groups of respondents this was 4.3% and 3.3%.

To the question “Is your knowledge enough to write to clients or on forums?” Almost a third of admins (26%) answered that they write as badly as they say. Products and those who communicate with the client are less likely to understand (32.9%) than progers (36%).

As for reading professional literature, the majority of the respondents have no problems with it - there is enough knowledge, however, there are questions.
Admins are more concerned. We asked: “In your opinion, do you know English well enough for a kind of activity?”, Almost half (46%) of the admins answered that it was not enough, and they are worried about it, progers and products care less - 37.5% and 39% respectively .
The most popular target level of products and progers is fluent, for admins it is to read and write. To the question “Do you think that for a successful career, how well do an IT person need to know English?” Most of the progers (39.6%) and products (44.7%) answered “Need to be fluent”, the admins (33.2%) won the “Enough read and write confidently. ”
Interestingly, those who believe that it is necessary to be fluent are already communicating or rewriting without problems.
And finally, most of those who believe that they need to be fluent are worried about their level. Most concerned about their level believe that you need to be fluent.

We thank you for your attention!
And now we have a new challenge - find out if an IT person is bored?
