In the US, 49.3 million people studied social media users. As far as I know, this is the first global survey of social network users. I hope that soon we will see the data on Russian social networks.
In most social networks (headliners) - MySpace, Facebook, Bebo, Hi5 - the number of women exceeds the number of men, and, significantly.
In the age group 18-24 on Facebook, women: 1,685,029, and men: 977,753 — the difference is 1.7 times. On MySpace, in the same age category, the situation with the ratio is slightly different, but still, women prevail: 7,091,214 women versus 5,226,788 men.
Other interesting features:
- Women aged 14-24 are more active in social networks and have more friends than men of the same age.
- Men aged 35 and more are more active in social networks and have more friends than women of the same age.
- The average user of a social network has from two to twenty five friends.
- A strangely high (disproportionate) number of users is 69 years old. Most likely, this is due to "virtuals" or false data about themselves, and the figure 69 has several emblematic values.

People who registered on at least one social network and truthfully indicated their age in the questionnaire (in the social network profile) were interviewed.
The study was done on June 10, 2008 by RapLeaf. Here are the data based on the responses of 90% of respondents. Total polled, remember, about 49 million people in the United States.
