When the collective mind fails: an example of IMDB

Flash mobs, vandalism and power groups are all natural side effects of Web 2.0 projects based on collective participation. But now there is another side effect, which previously did not manifest itself in all its glory. It's ... herd instinct. A rather indicative story took place on the IMDB website, which collects the opinions of users about feature films, and also allows you to vote for movies and publishes charts of the best films based on the results of a popular vote.

That's what happened. July 18, 2008 on the screens of American cinemas came the new film "The Dark Knight" . And - an amazing thing - in just one week this film soared immediately to the first place in the hit parade of the best feature films in the entire history of cinema. For reference: for ten years this position has been held by the “Godfather”. Here is the table as of today.

The investigation also showed that the fans of the Dark Knight not only acted in concert and put a maximum rating on their film, but also specifically voted against the Godfather in order to bring their film to the first place. That is, there are elements of vandalism. As a result of this action, The Godfather fell not even to the second, but immediately to the third place.

The concept of "collective intelligence" is the basis for many Web 2.0 projects. Of course, not everyone relies on it completely, but some, such as Wikipedia and Digg, depend on it one hundred percent. In the past, we have seen several times how this concept fails: for example, when it became clear that organized groups seized power on Digg (perhaps this is not a bug, but a feature) or during massive flash mobs on the same Digg a year ago, when users voted for the news in protest. We also know about numerous instances of vandalism on Wikipedia.

However, this case is something new. Not only is there a flash mob and vandalism, but there are also elements of social hacking, because a large mass of ordinary users were also involved in this action. The film came out on top, because due to the herd instinct, ordinary users also put a higher mark on this film than it deserves.
