Flash video in Opera Mini: an interesting solution

The software world is multifaceted, and in conjunction with online services there is practically no reasonable limit to combining the components of two different worlds. At the same time, there are often solutions that no one thought about before.

For example, take the latest news that Swisscom today launched the Natel service , one of the key components of which was Natel @ Browser, a specialized browser based on the Norwegian Opera Mini. Everything, it seems, is simple: owners of more than 250 models of pipes get additional service capabilities at their disposal. This is confirmed by the vigorous words of the description of the new product, where it is written in black and white that now Swisscom customers will be able to get full access to the charms of the Internet, be it sports news, weather reports or YouTube videos ...

So, stop. This is where an astute reader may wonder: which video, from which YouTube? Is flash mini already built into Opera Mini? The answer is really simple: no, Opera Mini did not have full support for the online YouTube service, it's just ... YouTube has added support for Opera Mini! This is implemented quite trivially: as soon as YouTube sees that it is being accessed from a mobile phone, the request is redirected to the mobile version of the service, where the flash technology is replaced with the usual data broadcast via the RTSP protocol, and Opera Mini to call it from hibernation .

So it remains to be seen whether it is worth loading the browser, which was originally designed for cramped working conditions, with additional “attachments”, or is it still easier to turn the services that often use “uncomfortable” technologies to the visitors?
