Web vs. Desktop

You're right [Seobaby], everything develops in a spiral. And if you unscrew this spiral back from the place from which you started, the mail (and all other applications) will again become online. There was no Internet then, but there were mainframes with installed software and terminals (consoles) connected to them.
')
Then it was technically and economically justified. Now? - a very big question. For the creators of the services, it is certainly not worth it, the main thing is money. And for users?

For the mass user, unfortunately, this question is also not worth it. People who are now actively using computers and the web, have recently learned about these technologies and simply cannot imagine how it was (good) before. The rest, because to say reasonable, users are simply crushed by the mass and forced to consume all these hundreds of web applications.

There is redundancy. The fact is that the web itself is an Internet application (the same as e-mail, whois, gopher, ...), whose client — the browser — is an operating system application.
Appropriately, modern web services are Internet application applications. This not only sounds bad, but also does not work well, too much overhead (although in the era of web 2.0, shouting in the squares is not worth it, orderlies can call under the white ruchenka ...)

How to call the mentioned AIR & Co do not even know ... the application application of the application ... :)
Why all this? When you can write just an application for the operating system and give it access to the network (yes, like a browser, like a favorite Bat, like FlashGet, like ICQ & Jabber).

We take and write a client for classmates. Classmates.exe for Windows, Classmates.app for MacOS. What is there some complex functionality? No, the same "profile only" mail.

And so for other services. So why is there a client for tweeter, but not for habr?

The answer is simple: SEO, advertising model, money, money, money!

But there will be a new spiral. It's time to start preparing for it.
