As a rule, most data centers are nondescript industrial buildings resembling storage facilities. They are not striking, monophonic and do not attract attention. The owners of the data center prefer to adhere to the rigor of the exterior of buildings containing server systems of corporations that are important for business or even for the economy of the whole country. But Google data center operators have decided to take a different look at building designs. They launched the “Data Center Mural Project” art project, designed to transform the gray walls of data centers into real works of street art.
Google is going to turn its server farms into huge art objects, decorated with artistic paintings. Photos and videos of the conversion process itself have been published on the Internet. ')
The company's specialists set the goal of making the data center walls more vivid, giving them individuality and special significance for society. In addition, colorful and fun drawings will delight passing by people creating a more positive atmosphere.
To implement their plans, Google hired artists to paint the walls of four data centers. Two of them are located in the USA: Mace County (Oklahoma) County Data Center and Council Bluffs (Iowa) Data Center. The other two are located in the Belgian city of St. Ghislain and in the Irish capital Dublin.
At the moment, data centers are already ready - in Oklahoma and in Belgium. But in the Irish data center and the data center of Iowa, wall paintings are not yet finished. Artists are trying to display and visualize the features of specific data centers, in accordance with their functions and location, the color of the city.
The artist Oli-B (Oli-B) worked on the painting of the Belgian data center. He built his artistic concept on the theme of “cloud”, depicting an abstraction of elements characteristic of the surrounding community, as well as images of a data center and photographs of its employees. In the figure, Oli-Bi is a cloud from data center operators, sheep that roam near the data center and a balloon from the annual L'Ascension à Saint-Ghislain festival.
By the way, the Google data center in the city of St. Ghislain is the first server farm in the world where engineers introduced free cooling technology (free cooling).
On a project in Myers County , artist Jenny Odell worked with a small group of painters. On the facade of the data center she depicted huge collages made up of satellite images of the Google Maps map service. Each photo reflects the different types of infrastructure systems currently in use. Odell wanted to show in her picture “the flow of goods, electricity and information.”
From the words of Jenny Odell:
I am attracted to complex structures, so the Internet is a great example. We seldom think of it as something material, having a structure.
The Data Center Mural Project has just begun, but Google does not plan to be limited to just four data centers. And after the artistic transformation of the American and Irish data center is completed, the company is going to turn the exterior of eleven more data centers into works of art.
