Mozilla tries to force government to uncover Firefox

Government intelligence often exploits software vulnerabilities to access confidential user information. Mozilla representatives filed a lawsuit in the US District Court to uncover information about the vulnerabilities that the country's government used in the criminal investigation.

The requirement of representatives of Mozilla dates from the previous case of the FBI in 2015, related to hacking the site from the deep web - then law enforcement agencies managed to find vulnerabilities in the Tor browser, which is based on the Firefox browser. The Mozilla lawsuit is aimed primarily at the need to provide information regarding the found vulnerability, directly affecting the operation of the Firefox browser.

“The government refused to provide information on the vulnerabilities found, which would allow us to fix it. Mozilla employees have every reason to believe that the government is exploiting a vulnerability that could remain in the latest versions of the Firefox browser.

Companies and the government are required to play a role in the safety of the country's residents online. Uncovering vulnerabilities to companies allows them to be closed in a timely manner, reducing the likelihood of abuse by attackers, ” said Dziel-Thayer, Director of Legal and Corporate Affairs at Mozilla.

The Mozilla case is similar to the case between Apple and the FBI, in which law enforcement agencies similarly refused to disclose the vulnerability found, which was used to circumvent the protection of the iPhone of one of the suspects. Not so long ago, information appeared on the hacking of Tor by the FBI for the subsequent accelerated obtaining of necessary information from users, and some sources confirmed this hacking.
