Jolla received $ 12 million investment - the company will stay afloat for another year
The developer of the operating system Sailfish company Jolla recently received a $ 12 million investment in the framework of the C round. The main objective of Sailfish is successful competition with the Android operating system in the market of low-cost mobile devices.
In November, the startup team Jolla was unable to successfully complete the C round of financing, as a result of which the company was forced to lay off part of its employees and begin restructuring. After receiving a new investment of $ 12 million, the management declares that this amount will be enough for the development of the company until the end of 2016. Due to problems with financing, Jolla also faced difficulties in supplying its own tablet, funds for which were collected through crowdfunding - the company claims that the first part of buyers, who have not received the tablet, will receive their funds back before the end of May this year. The second part of the buyers will most likely have to wait for the next D round of investment in 2017. ')
“At the moment, we are focusing on software development and licensing of various projects. The consumer product market is not our main market, but we may announce interesting mass products running under Sailfish OS, ” said Antti Saarinio, chairman of the board of directors of Jolla, to TechCrunch.
In the near future, under the control of Sailfish OS, a smartphone from Turing Robotics will be released, based on the concept of maximum protection of user information.
“The operating system Sailfish OS is used for the Turing Robotics smartphone, and we work together with the company to provide all the necessary software. At Jolla, we believe in the possibility of producing niche smartphones, ”shared the position of the company Antti Saarinio.
Despite the successful financing of the last round, the success of Jolla is a big question because of the huge number of competitors and niche devices from Chinese and other manufacturers. In the meantime, the company failed to prove the profitability of its concept.
