As we have not yet made a stencil for UX-design

They wanted to make a stencil to simplify the paper-based design of interfaces. Following the pattern of those that can be found at UIStencils.com , but with local specifics.

What for? To begin to see whether such a thing is useful in life. The second task is to encourage the use of a pen-paper instead of special UX-programs. And to put it simply - to play.

Requirements realized here such.

1. Metal. And then the plastic looks boring cheap.
2. Only with complex silhouettes. It’s better to draw squares, circles, arrows.

What to put, what silhouettes?
Discussed and made a giant list.

1. Social networks: VKontakte, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Odnoklassniki, Twitter, Pinterest, Google + .VK
2. Messengers: WhatsApp, Skype, Telegram, Viber, Slack, Messages on iOS, LiveTex.
3. Operating systems : Apple (yes, we know that this is a company), Windows, Android, Ubuntu.
4. Browsers: Chrome, Safari, MS Edge, Firefox, Yandex Browser, Opera.
5. Smartphone gestures: tap, swipe, zoom, scroll, cursor hand, cursor arrow.
6. Services (infrastructure): Dropbox, 1C, Google Drive, Yandex.Disk, Yandex.Market.
7. Monsters of the industry: Google, Yandex, Mail.ru, Wikipedia, Pornhub.
8. Symbols useful: download, WiFi, Bluetooth, battery, speech bubble, calendar, comment, wallet, bank card, camera, asterisk, heart, Fb-like, pie chart, key, QR code.
9. Large: pixel ruler, regular ruler, contours of iPhone, contour of Russia, symbol of Petersburg, symbol of Moscow.

From the final version, much was overlooked - it didn’t fit or got sick.

One of the first options - even before leveling and preparing for laser cutting - looked like this.



On production waited surprises.

1. Accept only files in CorelDraw format.
2. Long (about a week) are busy with the creation of a trial version.
3. And only after the probe ready to call the price.

The sampler turned out like this.



Production counted and the price: 800 rubles per item.
Expensive, but not yet about this.

We took the probe in hand and started testing.
Here is one of the pieces of paper with stencilled silhouettes.



It shows the main problems of the stencil.

1. The handle reduces the outline. For the result to be as it should, you need to push the boundaries of the shapes on the stencil. And under the fixed thickness of the rod. And if you want not to depend so much on the rod, you will have to simplify the objects being drawn.
2. Some contours are too complex, the handle jumps. You can shade, but you can’t circle it. Throw away.
3. Something (calendar, gestures) may be worth a noticeable increase. In a small version, they are not particularly needed.
4. It is very difficult to make small fillets. If you do not increase, then we throw it away.
5. Maybe make a stencil is not at all under the pencil? There are, for example, stencil brushes - what if they are more compatible here?

Problems that are not visible.

1. Are we right picked up a set of contours on the stencil? What to remove, what to add?
2. Do people need such a thing?
