China ranked second in terms of revenue from iOS in the world

The Chinese market has remained one of the most attractive for developers in recent years - and now it has officially ranked second in terms of revenue for iOS developers.

The US still holds the leading position, while Japan moved from the second place to the third. If we talk about the number of downloads of applications, then by this indicator China has long bypassed other countries. This was partly due to the large sales of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus in the first quarter of 2015, which were particularly popular due to the increased screen size.

Nevertheless, the growth in the total number of downloads did not lead to a similar increase in profits due to the peculiarities of the local market - Chinese users are characterized by relatively low spending in games per person. A similar situation is observed on various platforms - despite the significant advantage in the number of downloads on Google Play, the App Store remains the leader in total revenue, bypassing the competitor by 1.5 times.

On an annualized basis, the profit from iOS in China grew 2.2 times and this figure does not correlate with the total number of applications downloaded from the App Store. Most of the revenue generated gaming applications through in-game purchases. It is noteworthy that the bulk of the profits came in general, not in the games segment, but in just a few projects. The main players in the Chinese market are such projects as Fantasy Westward Journey, Westward Journey Online, Hero Moba and The Legend of Mir 2.

Considering the trend towards a similar increase in profits in the Chinese market, it can be assumed that in other segments of the App Store entertainment applications, China will likewise begin to lead in the very near future. At the moment, the local market has bypassed the Japanese market not only in terms of total profit from iOS devices, but also in the games category.

The US market still bypasses the Chinese by about 30%, but by the end of this year, the situation may change radically. But even with similar revenues in the Chinese market, the US market will remain key for application developers in the coming years - in this segment, China will not be able to overtake other countries for a long time precisely because of the peculiarities of the market and the love of users for free applications.
