New business line Mail.ru: the company has found a way to reduce customer costs for database infrastructure

Mail.ru has found a way to reduce the infrastructure costs of customers. The company has developed a new storage optimization technology based on the Tarantool opensource solution.

One server with Tarantool can replace 30 or more servers with a classical database management system (DBMS), says a representative of Mail.ru Group: “The solution itself is free, but customers will be able to receive paid technical support, as well as customize Tarantool for specific requests.”

According to Gartner, by 2018, 70% of new and 50% of existing applications in the world will use open source databases. The global DBMS market in 2015 reached $ 41.5 billion and could grow to $ 50 billion by 2017, estimated by IDC.
Dmitry Komissarov, General Director of New Cloud Technologies, estimates the Russian database market at $ 400–500 million: “The main player in the market is Oracle , which, before the crisis, earned about $ 200 million in Russia, followed by IBM and Microsoft databases.”

Using this solution in our own projects (Mail, Cloud Mail.Ru, myTarget, and many others) has already saved tens of millions of dollars. “For example, using Tarantool to optimize the storage of user profiles has provided us with savings of over $ 1 million,” said Vladimir Gabrielyan, vice president and technical director of the company.

Among those who use Tarantool is Badoo, an international dating network, and Wallarm, an information security developer . The latter uses the solution as a local data storage and analytics module for the “most critical part of the product, the traffic filtering node”, and Badoo uses Tarantool to store sessions.
Development of Tarantool started from scratch about 8 years ago and is still ongoing. “It provides the storage of user sessions and profiles, the work of such systems as portal authentication, anti-brute force, anti-phishing and anti-spam, where he proved his ability to work effectively with large amounts of data and under high loads,” added Vladimir Gabrielyan.

“Tarantula makes development easier and faster. The developer does not need to create a complex heterogeneous system from SQL DBMS + NoSQL DBMS + Cache. No need to create a huge cluster and pay millions for iron. One Tarantool is enough, ” explained Roem.ru, Denis Anikin, Technical Director of Mail.Ru Mail.

Tarantool could be claimed by those who need processing a large amount of unstructured information, for example, “Yandex” or Rambler & Co. , Dmitry Komissarov argues. “But it is unlikely that these companies will use the services of their main competitor.

“Probably, Tarantool will be used by niche players or companies belonging to the Mail.ru Group holding, for example, the large social networks VKontakte and Odnoklassniki, ” he quoted Kommersant.

Megamind asked for further clarification from Denis Anikin, Mail.Ru technical director:

1. A representative of Mail.ru Group says: “The solution itself is free, but customers will be able to receive paid technical support, as well as customize Tarantool for specific requests.” What amounts can be discussed for this item of income Mail.ru?

We do not disclose this information yet, but our plans are very ambitious. Our technology is unique, a good half of Mail.Ru Group services are based on it and we believe that we will be able to extend it to the whole world.

2. How fast can you customize, rebuild existing solutions using Tarantool (say, instead of MySQL)?

It depends on the case. We have to study the infrastructure of a specific client and only after that give some temporary assessments.

3. How big should a team be to start making a lot of money on customers?

We plan to learn to develop without a linear increase in the number of teams in relation to revenue. One of our ideas is launching a cloud service (PaaS / SaaS), which will allow us to deliver our solution to customers in public clouds without a team growth proportional to the number of customers.
