Last Saturday, exactly one year has passed since the launch of the Periscope video streaming service. During this period, there were several peaks in popularity of the service and today Periscope shared some data on the activity of its users.

In just one year, Periscope users spent more than 200 million broadcasts, and every day the service watches videos in time equivalent for 110 years. Recently, there has been a particularly rapid growth - only seven months ago, users watched videos of just 40 years a day in time equivalent. This indicator does not take into account views through the web version of the service and pasting to Twitter - the company considers only views in applications for iOS and Android.

“In fact, we are not surprised that now suddenly online streaming has become an interesting area. We thought about this even before the 800-pound gorilla in the form of Facebook woke up and came to this conclusion, ”said Kaivon Beckour, CEO of Periscope.

Despite this information, Periscope does not disclose data on the total number of active users - given the latest information on Twitter’s development problems, this is not surprising. Analysts and investors, who are already dissatisfied with the latest results of the company, can negatively perceive the slow growth of the active user base. As an alternative to this indicator, Periscope suggests counting active users per hour, which is 10 million.

The explosive growth in the popularity of Periscope became possible due to the active advertising of the service at the beginning of last year, as well as the relatively large user base of Twitter users. About the purchase of Periscope by Twitter became known even before the official launch of the service last year - then the social network saw in it a potential opportunity to attract new audiences by submitting fast video content.

The main issue remains the monetization of Periscope - until the service management has presented a single method that would allow unobtrusively to bring revenue from the service. Moreover, interest from the side of brands to Periscope gradually faded away and one of the reasons for this is the small interest of users to similar content.
