In 2015, about a quarter of e-commerce revenues in Russia accounted for purchases in foreign online stores. Most of these stores are owned by Chinese owners. The total volume of the Russian e-commerce market was $ 13.9 billion.

Compared with 2014, in ruble terms, the market grew by 16%, but in dollar terms it decreased by 28%. Excluding foreign retailers, the Russian market is $ 10.5 billion, analysts at East-West Digital News estimated.

In the domestic market, the goods are purchased by the buyer in the Russian online store and do not cross the border after the application is made (for example, when buying on Ozon.ru ).

In total, in 2015, consumers in Russia made 160 million purchases on the domestic e-commerce market - 10% more than a year earlier. On average, the cost of the order amounted to 4050 rubles, which is also higher compared to 2014 (3750). The demand grew most of all for leisure goods, pets and children, clothes, shoes and food products. On the other hand, the demand for electronics, home appliances, cosmetics and perfume decreased in comparison with 2014.

Compared to 2014, cross-border sales in the e-commerce market in Russia ($ 3.4 billion) grew by 55%.

In total, in 2015, Russians made 135 million cross-border purchases. In 2015, Chinese online stores accounted for more than 80% of all cross-border purchases made by Russians. For comparison, in 2014 this figure was 70%.

“Even taking into account the cost of delivery, many products are still more profitable to buy in foreign online stores. The price difference inclines Russian consumers to make purchases in Chinese online stores, especially in times of crisis. Another reason why foreign stores are popular among Russians is that many products simply cannot be purchased or are very difficult to find in local online stores, ” leads CNews researchers comments.

The number of Russian online stores that accept payments online for 2015 increased from 82 thousand to 88 thousand, according to a report from the research center MARC .

The most popular means of payment are bank cards - they are used by 76% of the resources. The Yandex.Money service is used on 56% of sites, another 47% use WebMoney , 45% use Qiwi , 13% use PayPal and 3% use RBK Money .
